Christmas Dessert Tablescapes

hello january, where are you going?!?  I’m not sure, but as I went to empty my camera from the weekend, I realized that there was still a bunch of fabulous Christmas photos on it from December.  Plus, you know, shockingly, I am having trouble saying goodbye to Christmas.

One of our favorite events annually is a Christmas Dessert at our church.  This year, both B and I and our friend Jackie decorated tables….

wanna see?  {these pictures courtesy of Jo who snapped away while we were busy decorating.  thank you!}

Metallic Star and Greenery Wreath

Ravenna Girls Gold Metallic Star Boxwood Wreath Tutorial 5 Metallic Star and Greenery Wreath

For the past couple of years we’ve used the same wreath on our front door – a deep green felt ruffle wreath I made once upon a time and have loved the simplicity of ever since. This year, though, I was ready for a change. I fell in love with this wreath and knew I had to try and recreate it.  My original plan was to use hemlock or fir as they did in the inspiration but then I found these gorgeous boxwood wreaths at Trader Joes for $10 and loved how rich and full they looked. Here is what else you will need:

Gold Sparkle Star Wreath:

- Green wreath (you could use preserved if you wanted to save this for multiple years)

- Kraft stars. The key is to buy a variety of sizes and shapes (I used some 5 pointed stars, some 6 pointed stars, and some flat stars)

- Elmers Glue/Modge Podge

- Martha Stewart Glitter – I used “Smokey Quartz

- Metal Wire – I used a dark bronze to hide with the brown branches

The first step is to glitter your stars. I didn’t include that step here because I used these for another event earlier in the week. But, the main tip I have for you is to spray paint these underneath the glitter in a similar color. That way when the glitter isn’t even or perfect, you can’t really tell. After they are spray painted, cover in glue or modge podge and then a consistent layer of glitter. Let dry: dunzo!

I first tried to just attach these to the wreath by the hanging cords they came with, but they were really floppy once upright. So instead, I attached wire to two ends through the star itself by inserting a straight pin to create a hole and then stringing the wire through. Do this on opposite ends of each star to secure them snug to the wreath. I think these are small enough holes that they are concealed within the glitter if you want to reuse.

Wrap the wire to the back of the wreath and twist to secure. This will leave you enough room to wiggle the star into place once you flip it back over.

The thing I liked the most about the inspiration wreath was the placement of the stars in a spray – almost looking like they were spinning around the greenery. The best way I found to accomplish this was to place them unevenly around the circle and to tuck them into the greenery as if they were coming out from the inside. Does that make sense? Its sort of a place one then try another and play as you go.

See how nice the variety in star/shapes is? Gives it more movement, I think. This was about a 30″ wreath and I used 7 stars. You could change the number depending on the size of your stars and the size of your greenery. And thats it, voila! Hang on your door and stand back to admire.

I think it looks PARTICULARLY festive on our Peppery door, and I actually like the boxwood a lot. Its  a different texture than much of the Evergreen you see around the Pacific Northwest this time of year. I’m planning to transition this well into the New Year as long as the boxwood stays looking nice.

Time to relax and admire your festive house. And worry about cleaning up later. . .

Birthday Festivus

I meant to get this post up Friday – but instead we were partay prepping, which was more fun at the time! Anyway, happy belated birthday to my bestest partner in crime, Danielle!

Seattle Winter Wonderland Birthday Festivus

Her birthday was last Friday and we got started celebrating early on Thursday night by hitting up the West Elm holiday evening with cupcake diorama decorating courtesy of Trophy Cupcakes (thanks again Trophy gals!). Then, thanks to our awesome friend Dana, we were gifted tickets to the 5th avenue theater production of Elf the Musical, which was nothing if not festive! It was so fun to be downtown with all the sparkly lights and everyone dressed up all festive (D most of all!).

Friday night we continued the festivities with a holiday elf party at our place, complete with the entire Trader Joe’s holiday cookie selection, and Tracy’s Cranberry Rosemary Spritzers. Yum! It was another great holiday time birthday – now we’re so ready to continue our celebrating.

All photos via instagram. You can follow me (B) here and D here.

Merry Metallic Hostess Gift

You know how sometimes you just want to put together a sweet little gift thats perfect for a friend, aunt, or party hostess? Quick and easy but pretty, festive, and also useful? Yeah, this is that.

Easy Holiday Hostess Gift by the ravenna girls Merry Metallic Hostess Gift

The base for this little package are silver brioche molds I snagged at world market (just $2 a piece!). I was wandering the aisles and couldn’t resist their little fluted edges and satin sheen. Pretttty. So I snagged the 4 for $8 bucks. steal. Since we have  a glut of homemade preserves this year (see blueberry madness ’12), I chose to wrap mine up with some blueberry lavender jam as a combo to be served with cheese or on a breakfast buffet. You could also wrap it with fancy mustard, salsa, or a concoction of your own choosing. Really anything that later can be served in a pretty little dish.

I punched out a 2″ circle from an oversized index card and wrote a little handwritten label, stuck to the top with double sided tape. Easy peasy.

Create a little swirl of tinsel, nestle your edibles right into, and if you’re feeling really fancy tuck in a teeny serving spoon. I got these white ceramic ones from CB2. Wrap it up with a bright ribbon and off you go!

Holiday Thursdays with West Elm

img18b Holiday Thursdays with West Elm

Are you guys in the holiday spirit yet?? We have our tree (can’t wait to introduce you!) but we’re still decking the halls around a busy schedule this week. Since there is an extra week of holiday season this year, there are so many amazing events that have started already. Just yesterday we heard that West Elm is hosting WEEKLY holiday workshops through the season. What a great way to get out, learn a little trick or two, hang out with fun people, and of course be surrounded by great gift ideas!

The dates, times, and topic are the same no matter which West Elm location you’re nearest. Visit the West Elm events page for details and to RSVP.

deck the walls halls 560x119 Holiday Thursdays with West Elm

The first one takes place this Thursday, 11/29 from 6-8pm and will be about holiday décor. Events for the rest of the month are (drumroll):

Thursday, 12/6, 6-8pm: Gift Wrapping

Thursday, 12/13, 6-8pm: Holiday Entertaining

Thursday, 12/20, 6-8pm: Last Minute Gifts

So fun, right? We can’t go this week, but I am definitely going to try and make it to either Holiday Entertaining or Last Minute Gifts (god knows we can always use some of those!)

If you’re a Seattle local, subscribe to West Elm Seattle facebook page for more specific details. Will I see you there??
