Firefly

We don’t have fireflies in Washington (or anywhere on the West Coast as far as I know). They also don’t live in New Orleans where I went to college. My first experience seeing and catching fireflies was in Junior High when I visited my friend Sarah in Wisconsin, and they instantly became a huge novelty for me. I don’t know if other people find them a nuisance to live with regularly, but for me they are fascinating and magical.

This past weekend was Sarah’s wedding in Washington DC. The setting was the beautiful Heurich House, with a luxurious garden courtyard where the cocktail reception was held. Just as dusk settled, fireflies started to emerge from the grass and blink among the garden trees and mingling wedding guests. It was so perfect to see them again while celebrating the wedding of the first person who introduced them.

The events of the weekend inspired me to share some firefly art and items from around the web. Just looking at these gets me excited for the warm summer nights ahead. What are your favorite firefly memories?
