Salmon Season

Its that time of year in Seattle when the salmon come back from their time in the ocean to swim upriver and spawn. Its a celebratory time around town, whether you head over to the eastside for Issaquah’s Salmon Days, or just picnic at the Ballard Locks to watch ‘em all jump.
What do we choose to do? Ha! What we do best, of course. . . eat :)

Lucky me received some beautiful fillets of fresh caught salmon from my wonderful fishing father, so we had 2 nights of pink grilled perfection. I took a gander at the produce shack and for $10 whipped up the following grilled salmon salad:

Grilled salmon fillets with a pre-prepared citrus mustard marinade

1/2 head green leaf lettuce

1 grapefruit, peeled, sliced, with all the pith removed

2 large ripe avocados, sliced

2 on-the-vine tomatoes, diced

1 large red pepper, diced

Fresh shaved parmesean ( i like to use our peeler to make large thick slices)

Lowfast Asian Sesame Vinagrette (QFC brand but i love it)

Broil salmon on HI for 10 min after marinading.

Toss the diced tomatoes and peppers with the lettuce and dressing. Break up salmon fillets just enough to make sure you remove all the bones (but not so much that you don’t have big ‘ol bites to enjoy!). Nestle the avocado and grapefruit around your beautiful salmon. Top with long shavings of Parmiggiano (but you can only pronounce it if you use Giada’s in-and-out Italian) and a little more drizzle of dressing.

Sometimes I also add things like unsalted peanuts or dried currants to the salad to add a little chewy or crunchy, but with salmon this good its fresh-fresh-fresh all the way.

oh dahlias, you are the bestest.

For one of our last summer weekends, we joined our friend Jackie  at the Seattle Conservatory for her birthday.  We took a great walk around the grounds… which that weekend included a Conservatory plant sale and my favorite late summer flower in full bloom.

It was sunny and warm and we ended off the day with a birthday panini of brie, apple, and lavender honey at the Volunteer Park Cafe.  YUM!

So, here you go, a posty-in-pictures:

Object Reassignment

PLcanisterCeilingMAIN

We call it upcycling: the folks from T.O.M.T design call it “Object Recovery and Reassignment” which i just LOVE. These people take EVERYTHING and turn it into something awesome. When i open a bakery in my next life, i am going to decorate/light/furnish it with these types of things. AND they offer classes! via The Craft Begins

And while we’re on the topic of object reassignment, i saw these cute tupperware lid clocks on etsy yesterday. Maybe its because i grew up in a house that rocked some seriously vintage tupperware, but these are just simple, whimsical, and kitchen-y cute :)

WICKED

wicked1

Wayyyyy back in the day ( Easter of 2004 to be exact) B saw her first Broadway show in New York.  She had never been to New York, you see, and I was going home to NJ for the holiday.  I invited her along so I could play tour guide she could see the great City.  And, because it was Easter, we saw a show.  This became a family tradition when my sister and I got older… the Easter Sunday matinee.

We saw Wicked, which had just opened a few months before in the Gershwin and still had its original cast with Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda the good witch.

The musical is the story of the Wicked Witch of the West  – Elphaba — and how she becomes that person in the Wizard of Oz.  The music, by Stephen Schwartz, is incredible.   Immediately after seeing the musical, the soundtrack was purchased and played constantly.

This show remains one of my personal favorites and was the perfect introduction to Broadway for B.

In fact, we both loved it so much that when B heard it was coming to Seattle, she bought tickets as soon as they went on sale.   thank goodness, rumor has it that it is sold out now.

And, I enjoyed it just as much the second time.  Only now I can sing along, every word.  : )

Why am I posting about my love of musicals?  To show you these little pictures:

Retail Rant #1

Dear Target,

Last night we went shopping at one of your local retail locations. It was sort of stressful because you are remodeling AGAIN. We had to crawl past construction debris to find deodorant, for God’s sake.

BUT we were able to find most of the things on our list, including a few gems for our bathroom remodel. Today, i was excited to come online and post about your products to give a little sneak-peak of our bathroom accessories. NONE of what we bought is on your website. Nothing. Nothing even close so people can use their imaginations. I am sad i won’t be able to share a little mini-mo0d-board.

So, you’ve lost your bloggy shout-outs*. Sucks to be you.

Respectfully,

The Ravenna Girls

So, dear readers, no fun images for you this morning. Last night at Target we picked up a lovely white seersucker shower curtain, to add a little refined texture. Its an homage to our southern “roots”. And boy, Blythe would be proud of our color/pattern restraint. We also picked up an awesome recycled glass soap pump so we can start buying bathroom hand soap in bulk to avoid unnecessary packaging. Its cute. And a clean, contemporary black frame for d’s Moomin artwork. Le sigh, pictures forthcoming.

*To our more realistic readers: I realize that by writing the word ‘Target’ in this post at all, that i am aiding their Search Engine Optimization and therefore giving them a bloggy shoutout even though i am not including actual links. I’m not actually that angry at Target. They have cute accessible items. But, i am frustrated that virtual shopping and brick and mortar are so often disconnected.
